Baptists and the American Civil War: May 26, 1861

Joseph Brown, Governor of Georgia, and a Southern BaptistConfederate General Robert E. Lee seeks to bolster his army both in terms of manpower and firearms. Today he writes Georgia governor Joseph E. Brown (image), noting that many Georgia volunteer companies are arriving in Virginia without weapons. Lee requests weapons from Brown, having already made similar requests from politicians of other states.

A Baptist – and perhaps the most prominent Baptist in the state of Georgia – Brown will remain a steadfast, if at times state-focused, supporter of the Confederacy throughout the war years.

At the present, the North and South are mere weeks away from the first major battle of the war. Neither side is yet prepared for the realities of the battlefield clashes so soon to come.
