The formation of autonomous black Baptist churches in the South continues unabated.
Today in the deep South town of Albany, Georgia the Mount Zion Baptist church is established in a blacksmith shop on the corner of State and Jackson streets. The Rev. R. R. Watson is the church’s founding pastor. Within six months a second black Baptist congregation, the Jackson Grove Baptist Church, is established by a minister from Atlanta, the Rev. David Hines, and a contingent of members from the Mount Zion church. R. R. Watson, meanwhile, serves as pastor of Mount Zion until his death. The church remains a vibrant congregation in the 21st century.
